Virtual Summer Cooking Camp
In our virtual summer cooking classes, Master Chefs teach teens and young adults to thrive in the kitchen by giving them every opportunity to roll up their sleeves and learn by doing in their own homes with ingredients provided right to your door!
Campers work to prep and cook family-style meals that can be eaten and enjoyed in the comfort of their own home after each class. With the guidance of our Master Chefs, young chefs will hone a wide range of culinary techniques while tasting novel flavors and creative dishes. From learning the ins-and-outs of managing a kitchen space to experiencing the satisfaction of sharing a meal you’ve cooked, there is something for everyone at Mangia DC’s Virtual Cooking Camp! All levels of culinary experience are welcome.
How it works:
A total of 12 different menus will be taught throughout the summer, featuring dishes from around the globe as well as familiar favorites. Each cooking camp course consists of four days of themed classes taught in a progressive format. Campers are encouraged to sign up for camp courses (consisting of four consecutive menus) to get the most out of this experience, however individual class sign-ups are also available.
Students will work with Mangia DC Master Chefs via live-stream with the ability to engage and ask questions. Campers learn and practice advanced culinary techniques, knife skills, plating, and professional kitchen management. Students will learn about and make a variety of starters, vegetarian sides, fresh pasta, poultry, red meat, fish, and desserts inspired by global and regional American cuisines. While some prior cooking experience is helpful, any young adult with a passion for food and a commitment to learning is welcome!

Born into an Italian-American family in the restaurant business and raised in the kitchen of Rose Cottage, a French restaurant in Long Island, NY, it is no surprise that Chef Dorothy followed in her mother and grandmother’s footsteps to become a third-generation woman chef.
After high school, Dorothy worked as an apprentice pastry chef mastering the art of gourmet desserts. Her inborn talent as a cook flourished as she ventured out into entrepreneurial endeavors, including operating her own wholesale dessert business and retail bakery. That particular business started through the kitchen of Chef Dorothy’s family’s restaurant and later expanded into its own storefront called Piece-a-Cake Bakery.
In 2007, Chef Dorothy enrolled in Queens College while working as a full-time cake decorator to pay her way through school. Using her strengths in psychology, family dynamics, human and adolescent development, and tenured experiences in the food industry, in 2009, she achieved an education degree as a licensed educator of Culinary Instruction and Family and Consumer Sciences.
Chef Dorothy went on to earn her M.Ed. from the University of Mary Washington and enjoyed the pleasure of teaching High School Culinary Arts Programs in Northern Virginia. By 2017, Chef Dorothy started a cooking business teaching families how to cook in their own homes.
Teaching is one of her two greatest passions — the other being preparing food for the enjoyment of others. Since joining the Mangia DC team in 2019, Chef Dorothy has shared these passions with our company and clients as a lead culinary instructor.
As a school teacher, father, former Marine, entrepreneur, and culinary instructor, Chef Julian is a man of many hats. He also happens to be a native Washingtonian and brings over 20 years of culinary experience to our classroom.
After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and World History from The Citadel military college in South Carolina, Julian elected to protect our nation by joining the Marines and received the rank of 2nd Lieutenant serving as a company grade officer. After returning home, he followed his passion for cooking and earned his Associate of Arts degree in Marietta, Georgia.
Chef Julian’s education didn’t stop there. Back in his hometown of DC, he achieved a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the University of the District of Columbia and a postgraduate degree in Curriculum and Instruction that prepared him to accept classroom leadership positions that lead him overseas for seven years in South Korea and Turkey.
Following his return to the U.S. in 2016, Chef Julian has become a positively disruptive voice in public education. He teaches English to enrichment students by day and teaches secondary Career and Technical Education courses in Culinary Arts to community college students by night. As an entrepreneur, Chef Julian created a nonprofit to help parents instill independence in their children through cooking.
In 2017, Chef Julian joined the Mangia DC team and has since become our Head Chef, supporting classes and events for a variety of groups from culinary students to corporate teams.
It was so unbelievably amazing working with Chef Dorothy and Mangia DC. I don’t even truly have the words to put together how much of an incredible experience it truly was. What Chef Dorothy taught us and the food we made together was so delicious and special… I truly cannot say thank you enough for all you did!Lauren

Absolutely! Your health is our #1 priority. Our team follows CDC guidelines wearing gloves and N95 masks when preparing and delivering your ingredients. Our work surfaces are sanitized using EPA-recommended products and ingredients are brought to you via contactless delivery.
While we love working with everyone in person, we’ve developed our online classes to be engaging and fun for participants! Our live-stream cooking class experience is recreational while teaching your kids life skills: clean up strategies, knife skills, safety in the kitchen. Campers will maintain the kitchen and cook delicious dishes (so you don’t have to)!
Our Master Chefs will lead campers via live feed with the ability to ask questions on the fly. We also recommend an adult in the household be on hand to help the younger students navigate your own kitchen stovetop and oven if they do not have any experience with cooking or using your appliances.
Our Master Chefs will be with students on a live feed offering strategies to ensure food items will not be undercooked and to provide visual confirmation on screen.
